What contrasts life throws at us!!!
On one hand it was Kaun Banega crorepati with ISB & IIMs competing with whose student takes home a heftier package! The expensive ISBs whose students have an offer of over a crore from an Indian company to boot. Money is flowing & people wondering whether it is worth all the hype.
On the other hand it is Medha Patkar who is on a hunger strike in protest for the basic rights of a group of people who have been promised a lot & nothing delivered till date. Her life is in danger & she firmly believes that if it could make a difference by physically suffering to bring their problems to the forefront....... So be it!
Do both these issues require the same amount of footage time?
While one person take's home a hefty package for herself/himself, the other is trying to make a difference in the lives of thousands! Who do think needs our time & support?

Rashmi, I think the answer to your question is quite obvious atleast to me!
The NBA (Narmada Bachao Andolan) has gotten more media attention this time than any of the previous protests (like when the dam height was raised to 110 mts, etc.,) (thanks to competitive media)... Most news channels have shown this this time and atleast more people are becoming aware and more the awareness more the pressure on the government.
But that said, the mainstream media still focusses more on IITM, ISB salaries, sensex and fashion week!
if u feel strongly for the NBA issue, i would suggest you to go through this petition and sign it and call/fax if possible!.. here it is
its a pity that the state govt. particularly gujarat (even after SC orders, and World Bank withdrawing from the project) is pushing for it without respecting the social and human rights of the people living there!
i guess u r not talking abt jus the Narmada case.. (am saying after reading the first comment)

its jus one example of how media negligence is nowadays..
though this time Medha Padhkar is gaining a bit of attention..
but, again.. as u said.. will this small attention be enough agaist all those news of hifi lifestyles, gossips n reality shows...
a question we should find answers ourselves.. i believe.. :)
Definitely, as NK says, the focus should be on the more worthwhile causes - and there is no question which one that is.
Unfortunately, I think that in our society there is still some fascination with vicarious thrills - how the rich live, film stars,dazzling placements, high flying fashion statements, urban lifestles, gossips - and the plethora of news channels continue to fuel the hype.
I guess the key for a good news channel would be to prioritize and balance - assign air time based on relevance and based on how worthwhile a certain piece of information is. They should not make the mistake of underestimating their audience and keep showing them bland stuff.
i think there should be equal time and attention :) balance is of the essence. and in the end its all how we perceive things. "one man's roof is another mans floor" right?
while people displaced should always be relocated and compensated adequately, what would india have done without hydroelectric power?

Think its time for KBC guys to call Medha Patkar and settle down things pretty quickly...so that ultimately, everyone is happy at the end ;)

True prasad, media gives us what we want & this ironically is what fetches them their TRPs.
A good suggestion Ram , but then this is where they bungle in dividing time. They do no know how much to give for what?

I think they are just two different issues.Why don't the media go beyond the mere NBA protest to assess the real damage that wud be caused by raisining the height of the dam and suggest better ways to do it to the govt?
I am not sure if its been done. If not, thatz what we need to do.

I think the media just wants to hype up every thing to their advantage. They just mean pure "business". Period.

I know what I am going to say would not go down well with many of fellow bloggers. However I support the Dam building, it's true that quite a many people have not been relocated. There is corruption, frustraion etc. etc. howver the project would reap in huge benefits and solve problems of multi-fold people who are now facing the threat of relocation. It's like asking, would you like to save 100 people or 10,000 people .... the choice is obvious!!
while one depicts the "progressiveness" that's called India...Indians are nonetheless champion competitors. The fact is well proven by so many MNC's eyeing the pie of the Indian grey cell.
The other portrays a very sad plight about the injustice meted out in the garb of "future prospects".....
both deserve media attention..but sadly the attention given to the later springs out problems rather than answers....
